If you have to get inside a locked house - What do you need? Obviously : Keys. Unless you plan to break the door. Similarly, there is a key which needs to be used for the glucose in the food you eat to get into the muscle cell, liver cells and all the other cells in the body. The key is the Insulin, which is released by the pancreas. Once the key is turned in - the gates of the cells open allowing the entry of glucose, which is then utilized by the cells for the production of energy.

She ate a healthy home cooked food everyday, never bothered to check on the carbs, fats, cholesterol or the calories in the food. We are natives of the coastal region of Karnataka, and our cooking had a liberal quantity of coconut in all its forms (grated coconut, coconut oil, coconut water), in our chutney, sambar or Payasa. My grandmother grew up cooking and eating all these and much more. Concerned about her health we would force her for an annual health screening.

Frequent urination often starts to occur early in pregnancy. It is caused by the growing uterus,  as well as hormonal changes that increase blood circulation to the pelvis. The urinary bladder is above the uterus and as the uterus is growing it puts additional pressure on the urinary bladder and this makes the women visit the bathroom frequently. It is a common occurrence and nothing to worry about. As the uterus grows out of the pelvis by 4th month the pressure over the bladder is less and the symptom also begins to recede.

But, If  frequency of urination is accompanied by pain and also fever then it could be due to other reasons like infection. Seek the advice of your Physician immediately.

About the baby

Almost the size of a Rice Grain.

Your baby is 6-7 mm in length by the end of the first month of the pregnancy.

Two weeks after the menstrual period the follicle containing the ovum is ripe and roughly measures 2 cm in diameter and now begins to produce hormones. When the ovum is released by the follicle every month, it is captured by the fallopian tube and the ovum travels through the fallopian tube all the while being surrounded by nourishing cells.

The anemia of pregnancy is one of the anemias in adults where it is seen not due to some disease. To illustrate what happens to the blood volume during pregnancy, let us Imagine a beaker half filled with water and with say 12 grams of red color added to it. Now when you add 50% more water to the beaker but add only 3 grams of red color to it, the resultant solution is diluted. The same thing happens in Pregnancy. Although the plasma volume increases by 50% the red cell mass increases only by 15 to 25%. In a healthy pregnant woman, the plasma volume is thought to increase by almost 1250 ml. Her pre-pregnancy plasma volume would be close to 2600 ml. While the red cell mass increases by relatively much less, a rise of about 250 ml (some 18% of the non-pregnant volume) in women who take no supplemental iron, and between 400 and 450 ml when iron supplements are taken. Thus you see the dilution in the red cells.

Oxytocin plays a crucial role in emotional bonding - whether it is between romantic partners, parents, and children, or even owners and their pets. The hormone called the "love hormone" is naturally released into our body when we make love or make new friends. But apart from its role in social bonding and reproduction, oxytocin also helps mothers give birth. During labor Oxytocin stimulates powerful contractions,  helping the cervix to dilate and open up in preparation for delivery. This is why it is often used as a drug to aid birth.
