Gastritis during pregnancy

Written by

So why do pregnant women experience gastritis?

Gastric motility decreases (Food moves slower) as all the muscles are relaxed due to the hormones released during pregnancy along with the slowed movement the gastric emptying time (time taken for the food to go to the small intestine from the stomach) also increases.

This causes food to remain in the stomach longer.  The gastro-oesophageal sphincter (Valve which is present between the Oesophagus and Stomach) is  also relaxed. This causes the reflux of food into the oesophagus. All these three factors the slowed movement, the delayed gastric emptying and the reflux of food in to the oesophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter causes gastritis in pregnant women.

- Eat small meals but frequent meals.

- If gastritis bothers you, it is preferable to avoid, spicy and oily food.

- Avoid lying down immediately after having food, try to walk or sit upright for some time, in other words eat early and give a gap before you go to bed for the food to get digested

- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
