Cord around the neck

Written by

1 out of 3 babies is born with the cord around the neck. For most babies, it does not matter at all if there is a chord around the neck. Most of the time the chord is long.  The average umbilical cord length is around 50-60 centimeters long, and baby is able to handle the stress of labor fairly well as long as labor goes about in its own phase.

A normal, healthy umbilical cord is filled with Wharton’s jelly, a soft, gelatinous substance which protects the blood vessels inside the cord. This substance helps to protect the cord against compression as well as true knots

Usually, when the doctors see a chord around the neck of a baby in the ultrasound before labor, they will make a note of it. As the labor progresses the baby is monitored much more frequently for signs of stress, like a decrease in heart rate of the baby. Usually, during labor every time the mother pushes, there tends to be a slight decrease in the heart rate of the baby, but it recovers after the push. In the case of severe stress, the lowered heart rate may not recover. At this stage, the Doctor may take the call for an intervention including perhaps a C-Section. But deciding for an elective C-Section, by just looking at a chord around the neck during an Ante-natal scan may not be needed. A cord around the neck is a very common occurrence, and needn't be feared. However, if you have any concerns or feel that something isn't right, count your baby's kicks and always speak to your care provider for reassurance or diagnosis.
