Getting pregnant with PCOD

Written by

Women with PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) may have problems getting pregnant. Pregnancy happens when the sperm fertilizes the egg released by the ovary during ovulation, i.e  during the 12 to 16 day of the menstrual cycle. But in Women who are suffering from PCOD, Ovulation does not happen or happens rarely. So, no egg is released and thus no fertilization.

So, if a woman who is suffering from PCOD, wishes to get pregnant, Doctors may have to give her medication, which helps in inducing ovulation.

Treatment for PCOD

As PCOD is a disease where there is a hormonal imbalance and this imbalance is the reason for irregular periods, doctors try to first regularize the periods by hormonal treatment.

But, for women who want to get pregnant, Doctors first try advising lifestyle changes, which includes losing weight and making dietary changes. Apart from this, diabetic medications such as metformin are given to women, which helps in losing weight and control of insulin levels.

If the above treatment is not successful, then the doctors move on to ovulation induction with medications like clomiphene. This medication can sometimes cause the ripening of many follicles.Surgery can be an option to improve fertility if other treatments don’t work. Ovarian drilling is a procedure that makes tiny holes in the ovary with a laser or thin heated needle to restore normal ovulation.

The next mode of treatment is IUI or intra-uterine insemination.
