While parents are always eager to introduce new tastes and foods to their infant it is better to avoid certain foods until your baby is one year old.

Some of the foods that need to be avoided are

-

Cow's milk - Infant's kidneys are still not equipped to handle the proteins present in Cow's milk. It can put a lot of strain on the baby's kidneys. Thus it better to avoid Cow's milk until the baby's kidneys are well-developed and able to process the milk. In the meanwhile, it is best to breastfeed the baby and in circumstances where breastfeeding is not possible, you can give the baby a commercially available formula.

-

Honey - Honey can contain spores of Clostridium botulinum bacteria which can cause botulism in babies. Botulism is a fatal condition and you do not want to put your baby at risk of this infection. So it better to avoid Honey till the baby is a toddler.

- Hard nuts - Peanuts or other nuts which can cause a choking hazard is better avoided, till the baby has some teeth and is able to chew on it.

 - Meat and meat products - It is better to avoid meat, as they contain a high amount of nitrates and sodium.

 - Fish - Some fish can contain mercury and is better avoided during pregnancy and also during infancy

- Fruit juices - Fruit juices are usually empty calories. They are usually processed and are devoid of fiber. It is better to avoid juices as they contain high amounts of sugars and the baby can get filled with juices and may not have room for other healthier options. More sweets and juices, especially before sleep, can lead to dental caries too.

- Sweets - Our Indian sweets contain high amounts of sugar and ghee. It is okay to occasionally feed them some sugary treats but making them into a habit can be a problem. Babies usually favour sweets and encouraging them with more sweets can make them sweet tooth for life.
