Pica (craving non-food items) during pregnancy

Written by

Some women ask me if it normal for a pregnant woman to crave for non-food substances like dirt, mud, chalk, charcoal, wood, toothpaste etc. This craving for non-food substances is called Pica. Pica is also seen in children. The reason for Pica is still not clear but experts believe it could be related to some deficiencies. One of them being Iron deficiency.

But, the pregnant woman needs to be careful in what they eat. Some cravings could be an indication for underlying physical or mental illness. Eating these substances can harm the baby. Eating non-food substances may also interfere with the absorption of nutrient substances. So, if you have any of these cravings inform your doctor and get checked to see if you are deficient and the doctor will usually take a decision on the course of your treatment.
